近年來VLSI技術的發達帶動了電腦體積逐步邁向輕薄短小的時代，筆記型電腦的優勢即是在於它的體積小、重量輕，而其記算的能力卻不減反增，因而廣受使用者的青睞。另一方面，網路的盛行，促使筆記型電腦的使用者也希望筆記型電腦能夠具備桌上型電腦的功能，透過網路連接Internet，獲取網路資訊。
筆記型電腦的特色在於其輕小、攜帶方便、隨時隨地都可使用，所以連接網路的方式就不能以有線網路上網，而必須透過無線網路，然而將傳統的有線網路改成無線網路必將面臨一些新的問題。
目前在Internet上用來傳輸資料的通訊協定就是TCP/IP，而傳輸層中所使用的就是TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)，它是一個可靠的(reliable)、連結導向的(connection-oriented)通訊協定，並且擁有許多的機制能夠有效處理有線網路中所遇到的問題。然而在無線網路的環境中所遇到的問題卻和有線網路所遇到的問題迥然不同，若還是以TCP來傳輸資料那將造成效能的低落。
為了解決這些無線網路所產生的問題，我們提出一套新的傳輸定，稱為WTCP(Wireless Transmission Control Protocol)，這是根據無線網路環境中所遇到的問題提出改進的方法，因此能夠比TCP更適用於傳輸不穩定的無線網路。
TCP位顧網路七層中的傳輸層，它是一個可靠的、連結導向的通訊協定。最主要的功能就是對一個連結(connection)做擁塞控制(congestion control)和流量控制(flow control)。而其控制的方法就是使用滑重窗口(sliding window)。也就是傳送者(sender)會持續地傳出封包，直到窗口滿後為止。
封包在傳送的過程中，因為必須經過許多的路由器(router)，而路由器的儲存空間有限，也就是其所能處理的資料量是有限的，若所到達的資料量過多，則勢必有一些資料將會被丟棄，而造成了封包的遺失。在TCP中用來處理此問題的方式是使用一個擁塞窗口(congestion window)。初始時擁塞窗口的大小被設定為只足夠傳送一個封包的資料量。每一次若收到一個確認(acknowledgment)後便可多加上一個封包的資料量。這個機制一般稱為”慢啟動”(slow start)。
另一方面，接收者的儲存空間也是有限的，因此它必須主動的告知傳送者它還有多大的空間可用來接收資料，而此窗口稱為”接收窗口”(receiver window)。用以避免傳送者傳出過多的資料，造成接收者無所法處理。
而滑動窗口的大小就是由擁塞窗口和接收窗口相比較後取小的那一個。也就是由此窗口來控制傳送者所能傳出的資料量。
每當傳送者送出一個封包後，就會設定一個等待確回來的時間，若在此時間內沒有收到確認，也就是逾時(time out)，則代表封包遺失。而在有線網路中從傳送者到接收者須經過多個路由器和通訊閘(gateway)，所以TCP的機制中假設原包遺失是因為發生了擁塞，因此發生逾時後TCP就降低擁塞窗口，以減少封包注入網路，抑止擁塞繼續發生。這些假設在有線網路中是成立的，然而在無線網路中的情況卻不一樣。因為封包的遺失並不起因於擁塞，是由於無線網路中暫時的斷訊和高錯誤率所引起。很明顯的，若將TCP用在無線網路中，那將會造成它做出錯誤的假設而去降低了擁塞窗口，抑止封包的傳輸，當然造成了能的低落。
在本研究中，重新提出一套方法，它依據無線網路的特性提出解決之道，企圖將無線網路的特徵隱藏起來，讓傳送者不因短暫的斷訊而降低擁塞窗口，進而達到效能的提升。

The characteristics of the wireless network environment are different from those of the wired network environment. To increase the throughput of data transmission, we propose a wireless transport control protocol (WTCP) that is suitable for the internetworking of wired and wireless networks. The features of WTCP include fast acknowledgement, on-demand retransmission, K-success status report and timeout mechanism at the receiver module. WTCP is capable of tackling the problems by the vulnerable wireless environment and TCP flow control mechanism at the sender side. We develop analytical models to evaluate the performance of WTCP. The analytical results are verified by simulation results. The analytical and simulation results show that WTCP performs better than TCP does.
