近年來隨著電腦軟硬體技術的進步,使得多媒體的使用環境快速發展及普及,由於多媒體資料在數量上日漸龐大,種類也日漸增加,相對的使得傳統的關聯式資料庫系統對於多媒體資料內容之處理能力已感不足。況且某些多媒體資料之內容為純粹二進位資料(Raw Data),完全跟多媒體內容之意義毫無關係,所以如何協助使用者在如此浩瀚的多媒體資料庫系統中找出他所需要且具有意義的多媒體資料,成為多媒體資料庫管理系統研究的一個主要目標。
本系統提出一個利用文字描述(Text Description)的方式,以內容為基礎擷取(Content-Based Retrieval)的方法來搜尋所想要的視訊資料,並採用建立一個歸納階層樹(Generalization Hierachy Tree)作為領域知識庫(Domain Knowledge Base),如此藉由建立視訊物件相互之間的關係,使用者即能在數量龐大的資料庫裡,輸入近似人類之語意描述,來搜尋所需要的視訊資料。
本系統之相關軟體功能已在網路型Window環境下發展成功,在一個關聯式資料庫系統之外層採用物件導向之資料庫模式來儲存多媒體資料及其索引資料,同時在系統內部建立絡樹結構(Lattice Tree)作為關鍵字之索引,使用者只需透過描述關鍵字的輸入,即能有效地且直覺地搜尋所需的視訊物件,以減少不必要的搜尋時間。

The amount of multimedia data and type increases rapidly, due to recently the progress of hardware techniques and the popularity of multimedia application. For digitized binary data, the conventional multimedia database systems designed for managing textual and numerical data are no longer adequate for the multimedia various data type. The multimedia data itself is the raw data which is created independently from what its effective content represent. Therefore, to help user to search the desired data from the huge amount of multimedia data has become an important research issue in multimedia database management system.
In this system, we uses descriptive text as the content-based for video objects to support the search method of content-based video data retrieval. By utilizing a generalization hierarchy of domain knowledge base to establish relationship between video objects, users can use descriptive semantics to search desired video data in the content-based video retrieval system.
This system has been successfully developed on the networked Windows platform. By using Object-Oriented database model to store video data and its index data onto the relational database and with established lattice tree structure for keyword indexing in this retrieval system. Users can effectively and visually use least search time to retrieve the desired video objects.
