最近一系列彗星及隕石的事件，以及人造衛星對行星探測使人們對行星大氣，彗星介質等研究引起興趣。一些碳氫化合物，例如甲、乙、丙醇等，這幾個分子除在彗星中測到，另外也是星際物質之一員，VUV光解是此類物質生成與破壞的一重要因素。測量甲、乙、丙醇的光吸收截面和螢光截面，對我們研究星際雲(interstellar clouds)的形成和分佈過程是有幫助的。
本論文主要研究醇類在真空紫外光區的光吸收現象、激發螢光情形以及光解反應。分別以同步輻射光源及氘燈做為激發光源作出了甲醇、乙醇、丙醇和異丙醇由105-220nm的吸收光譜及甲醇的激發螢光光譜。我們觀察到甲醇開始產生螢光的激發波長約在143nm，甲醇的OH(A 2S+)螢光量子產率(fluorescence quantum yield) < 0.8%，而乙醇的OH(A)螢光的量子產率就不到0.1%。其他醇類的螢光因為更弱，使我們無法做進一步的分析。
