在巴哈的時代，使用「幻想曲」這個詞的時候，是指想像力的自由飛翔，在一首這樣的樂曲中，作曲家的想像力可以完全自由的發揮，不受傳統的形式所限制，更能表現個人的精神和風格。
半音階幻想曲主要分成四段:第一段似激烈華麗的觸技曲(T1-T26)，第二段是神秘的琶音樂段(T27-T49)，第三段是如歌般，內省收斂的宣敘調(T49-T60)，第四段是尾聲(T60-T79)。
此幻想曲整體的結構十分的自由，使用了大量的音階、琶音、以及各種音型的變化所構成，中段的宣敘調和一開始的觸技曲形成強烈的對比，更添整曲的戲劇性的效果。此外，大量減七和弦的使用，在巴哈當時是十分令人不可思議的，使得此曲更添神秘浪漫的色彩，與幻想曲一詞更加貼切了。
這是一個三聲部的賦格曲，比起巴哈的其它作品，此賦格並不是那麼艱深困難，但是形式上、聲部對位上都是十分的對稱適當，其中也表達出了半音階的意念，和之前的幻想曲互相呼應，此外在節奏上從頭至尾一直貫穿著相同的節奏，將原本由幻想曲延續過來那種浪漫神秘的色彩，漸漸的提昇成一種熱情。
全曲共161個小節，比起前面的幻想曲多了約一倍，在這麼長的賦格中，可以分成四個段落和尾奏；巴哈大都是運用一開始的半音階主題和相同的節奏動機來發展，在每一個插入的樂段中也引進新的素材，我們可以看到巴哈將原本單純的動機，運用發展到最後是如此寬闊龐大的效果,堪稱藝術之作。

In Bach''s time. to use the tern "Fantasy" means to set free of
one''simagination,and in such a composition,the imagination of the composer can be completely released and unbounded by the traditinal format, thus the personal spirit and style is shown.
The chromantic fantasy mainly seperate into four parts:
the first part is a toccata;the second part use a lot of arpeggio;the third part is a recitative;the forth part is a coda.
This is a three-parts fuge. Compares to the other compositions of Bach,the one is not so difficult, but the form and the counterpoint are set as well.It also show the idea of chromaticism.Besides,a through-out rhythm is set from the beginning to the end.
