人類學的概念工具從「文化」到「族群」,研究分析的基礎單位則是由「部落」變成「族群」。(Jenkins 1996: 809)事實上,「族群」這個概念不但牽涉了人類學對象及知識的發展,蘊含於內裡的人類學知識與實踐的關係。這樣的反省直接發生在人類學者生產的文本-民族誌,一是人類學民族誌是否作為執行帝國主義維持文化霸權的工具上;二是人類學文本所涉及國族以及族群建構的關係。因此,我們將在第二章裡,先從族群研究興起的時代背景談起,復原人類學裡「族群」提出的意涵,並將「族群」定義為現代國家國家下的「次群體」。而「族群」研究的意義及貢獻是什麼?我們將進一步透過民族誌的書寫,回到對人類學知識的反省,將「族群」概念的提出定位為主觀研究取向的人類學反省。
支持回到認知系統的討論的學者以為,「族群」應該作為「對人的分類」(Chapman et al., 1989: 17),「分類─對世界作意義的建構─是社會生存的必要條件」(Comaroff 1987: 303)因此,接下來的幾章裡,我們直接處理「文化」或「分類系統」。我們說過族群運動的關懷者所要注意的是定義「集體」出來的「文化」,而非僅止於認同,如果說一種人(people)/一個文化(culture)意義上的群體/一個族群(ethnicity)的消失,指的是它在人群中無法被辨識出來或者說已成為構成另一人群的一份子,那麼在怎麼樣的情況下,族群才是存在的(而所謂的存在就是可辨識的),我們能被人類學家辨識,一如我們能被別人(other/s)辨識出來。簡單的說,「人」在文化層次是怎麼被辨認出來了,「人」在文化層次的意義是什麼?我們藉由會回到人類學者所證成「集體」的前提來討論。
