珊瑚礁魚類的高多樣性以及地區魚類群聚結構與仔稚魚補充有密切的關係,而相對於仔稚魚的補充在時間、空間等大尺度上的高變異性,各魚種仔稚魚在定棲時棲所選擇的機制則變化較小。群棲現象常見於珊瑚礁魚類稚魚時期,本研究以一種具強烈群棲性的雀鯛─網紋圓雀鯛(Dascyllus reticulatus)為材料,在墾丁海域進行調查,研究其仔稚魚補充和稚魚時期棲所選擇的特性。經在墾丁地區跳石、香蕉灣、沙島、核三廠入水口以及後壁湖等五個測站進行實地潛水調查,各在400平方公尺內收集網紋圓雀鯛稚魚及其棲息的棲地珊瑚資料,總計觀察到304尾魚,其棲地珊瑚的種類有桌狀軸孔珊瑚類、凸起狀軸孔珊瑚類、萼柱珊瑚類、鹿角珊瑚類以及歧枝微孔珊瑚類等五類分枝狀珊瑚。測站間稚魚的數量及其合適棲地珊瑚的種類與覆蓋面積變化都很大。各測站中稚魚在諸多棲地珊瑚上所出現的數量,經轉換成偏好參數(electivity index),並進一步分析稚魚對不同棲地珊瑚的選擇強度,發現其對各珊瑚的選擇強度由大至小依次為桌狀軸孔珊瑚類、歧枝微孔珊瑚類、鹿角珊瑚類。在凸起狀軸孔珊瑚類和萼柱珊瑚類雖然也有稚魚棲息,但是其偏好參數皆為負值。在所分析的這五類棲地珊瑚中,其被選擇到的強度與珊瑚分枝間空隙空間大小之間呈現負相關,亦即空隙空間愈小,被選擇做為棲所的機會愈高。此外,經過分析比較,顯示出新定棲的稚魚與體長較大的稚魚在個體數目上呈正相關。為了瞭解定棲現象是否受到已定棲的同種個體的影響,以模型珊瑚在海底做稚魚棲所選擇實驗,結果顯示若原棲息的同種數目為8~10隻時,同種吸引力的效應十分明顯;但在同種數目為3~5隻時,則此效應並不顯著。另外,自1997年2月起至1998年9月止共19個月期間,在跳石海域的五株桌狀軸孔珊瑚進行棲息其上的稚魚數量調查。所收集到的資料顯示,網紋圓雀鯛在此地區一年有一次補充的高峰,這一高峰發生在8月至10月,個體總數在補充高峰後明顯減少,並且在6月時到達最低值。因此,對網紋圓雀鯛的稚魚時期而言,影響其空間分布的因素除了各地區稚魚偏好的棲地多寡外,同種個體存在的數目可能也是重要因素之一;而其補充量在時間上的變化,則主要可能受生殖季節、浮游仔稚魚來源以及稚魚時期死亡率的控制。
