果實、種子的形態及成熟度會影響食果性靈長類動物處理種子的方式,不同的處理方式會導致不同的傳播效益。台灣獼猴是植食性動物,偏嗜果實,當環境中有可食用的果實時,會以果實為優先選擇的食物。在福山試驗林所作過的食性研究中,台灣獼猴食用果實比例是所有食物類型中最大的。本研究的目的是了解各植種果實種子的形態與台灣獼猴取食利用方式的關係,以及不同取食利用方式對於種子生存機會的影響,進而推論台灣獼猴對於不同種類種子傳播的潛能。
1998年3月至1999年2月於福山試驗林,藉由觀察與排遺分析記錄台灣獼猴所取食利用的果實種類共28科66種,其中有11種果實只在未成熟時被取食,而其種子有10種是被咬碎,沒有被傳播的機會。53種在成熟時被取食的果實中,種子大小在8.5×16.7mm以下者,都被台灣獼猴放進嘴裡處理,其中小於3.5×5mm的35種種子被吞入,其餘的種子,則被咬碎(9種)或完整吐出(10種);而直徑為23mm的山龍眼種子則不被塞進嘴裡,而是在啃咬後被丟在母樹下。
萌發試驗中發現,被吐出的種子其發芽率比對照組的發芽率高。台灣獼猴不只將被吐出的種子帶離一段距離,而且也增加其發芽率,所以對這些種子有傳播的功能。被完整吞入的種子在台灣獼猴消化道內的平均停留時間是36.4±5.4小時,這段時間內種子可以被帶離約2.4公里。排遺內種子的萌發試驗中所種植的17種種子,有3種沒有發芽,有14種會發芽,3種發芽率高於對照組。除了那3種不會發芽的種類,台灣獼猴對於被吞入的種子亦有傳播的潛能。
