When one estimates the throughput of the light valve LCD projectors prior to constructing prototype, the efficiency for each component in the LCD projector is specified. However, efficiency for the lamp-reflector combination is lacking, which in fact is among the most important factors to estimate the efficiency of the light valves projector. It is crucial because it represents how many lumens are coupled into the systems that are collected by the reflector. This factor varies, depending on how the system is designed. It is also related to the size of the source, the area of the aperture stop of the system, and the F/# of the system. Those geometry parameters influence a quantity we call it Etendue, which is a French word means ''optical extent'' or ''optical invariant''.
Adopting Etendue concept, the system designer will be able to estimate the throughput of the light valve projectors completely. In this paper, we will provide an innovative method estimate efficiency via the use of the collected lumens from the
source-reflector combination, based upon the Etendue concept.
