Abstract The purpose of this experimental study intended to verify the effects of social skill training program on enhancing social skills, self concepts and social relationships of cleft palate children. Twenty-four cleft palate children aged between 9 and 10 years old participated in this study. They were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. A twenty-four hours training program, divided into eight sessions was delivered to the experimental group only. Research instruments included 「Social-Skill Scale」,「Children's Self-Concept Scale」,「Sociometric Rating Scale」,「Pre-and Post-Training Checklist」and 「Parent's Feedback Questionnaire」were used to assess the training effects. Results showed that: 1.As predicted, cleft palate children reported more negative self-attitude of personality than general children, but no difference was found in social skills. 2.During the training process, the social skills training program can help the experimental group to increase social skills. 3.After the training process, the experimental group showed significant improvement in negative social behaviors, self-value and self-beliefs, but showed no difference was found in sociometric ratings. 4.After the training process, there were significant differences between experimental group and control group in self-attitude of personality, however, sbjects showed no differences in soicomtric ratings. 5.Parents of the experimental group expressed great satisfaction with the social skill program, including activities, contents, and the effects of skills learning.
