許多學者已探討過童話中動物變形（人變成動物或動物變成人），但是整體而言並不夠有系統。因此，本論文將此主體分成四個重點來研究。第一章討論人類最初因何幻想動物變形，進而探討這一類的想像是如何發展。如動物變形和人性弱點有何關聯？又如，解除魔咒的角色如何代表人性中可貴的特質。第二章討論動物變形中性別角色的議題。此章檢驗其中相關角色（被施咒者、解救者、施咒者）的男女差異，譬如角色的刻畫或功用。第三章探討動物新郎與動物新娘的相關研究。新娘的心理成長過程已被廣泛地討論過，然而新郎的部份卻被忽略，本章討論在這種婚姻中新郎如何成長。第四章進而討論動物變形如何幫助角色成長，也幫助讀者成長。因此童話故事中，動物變形傳達重要的訊息，有助個人成長又有助人與人之間的關係，並且告訴讀者如何從動物般的層次提昇發展成為真正的人。

Animal transformation in fairy tales has been discussed by many critics from various angles. Nevertheless, their opinions may differ greatly and their investigation is not systematic enough on the whole. This thesis, therefore, explores the subject in a more organized manner according to four focuses.
Chapter One traces the development of animal transformation in humans’ imagination and relates it to individual human traits. How, for instance, may animal transformation involve human frailties and how may a disenchanter stand for praiseworthy qualities? Chapter Two examines gender difference in animal transformation. It compares portrayals and functions between male and female animals, between male and female deliverers, and between male and female enchanters. Chapter Three compiles and compares several insightful discussions of animal-bride and animal-groom fairy tales. They tend to see much growth in the brides, but not in the grooms. My investigation shows that such marriages also help grooms to mature significantly. Chapter Four further discusses animal transformation as an initiation for readers as well as the characters involved. Animal transformation in fairy tales, therefore, carries important messages about human individuals, human relationships, and how one may develop from a low-level, animal-like existence into a true human being.
