當我們決定使用語言中的方位詞來表達物體之間的空間關係時，基本上會以三個不同參照框架為依據，分別是觀察者中心（指示性）框架、物體中心（本質性）框架、環境中心（外來性）框架。而關於英文空間詞above在這三個參照框架中的存在情況，有兩派學者持不同的看法，一派說法認為above只存在於環境中心框架中，而這環境的因素主要是來自於地心引力（Garnham 1989）;另一派則宣稱above在三個框架中都會存在(Carlson-Radvansky and Irwin 1993)。所以本文選擇簡單空間方位詞「上」當中常用的三個詞彙「上頭、上方、上面」以及其他方位詞如「上邊、上部、上層」等雙音節方位詞來探討，依據中央研究院平衡語料庫中，關於上頭、上方、上面、上邊、上部、上層所提供的共六百四十九筆資料為主，以及其他相關語料來檢驗這些方位詞在使用時，會依據單一參照框架，還是多重參照框架。我們的研究結果證實這些方位詞在使用時，於三個參照框架中的情況都存在，與Carlson-Radvansky and Irwin (1993)發現英文above的結果一致。此外，這些方位詞在參照框架中使用時，目的物與參照物的相對位置會呈現容入、接觸或離析的存在型態。
另外我們還把一些在三個參照框架外的情況加以討論，這裡主要指「上面」在「表面」接觸及「裡面」的用法。在「表面」接觸方面，我們以參照物外表可見部分的語用特性來解釋。至於「裡面」的用法方面，是指「上面」可以和「裡面」互換的情況，我們以語用角度中的不同語境與隱喻來解釋這種具體與抽象互動的情況。此外，也會比較中文的上面/裡面與英文的on/in各有何使用上的相同及相異處。另外我們還提出「接觸角度」的不同，用來解釋「上面」在表面接觸用法時，包含所有在三個參照框架內及外的情況。
