正如同臺灣附近的海底地形一般，臺灣附近的水文流場也相當複雜，連帶地臺灣周圍的海底表層沉積物也在海底地形與水文流場的交互影響下，出現錯綜複雜的分布情形。在Boggs et al.（1979）之後，就沒有學者再針對大區域作廣泛性的討論，大多數的研究僅針對特定地區深入探討，因此本論文即利用1991-1994年在臺灣附近海域採集之表層沉積物組織、X-光礦物及化學成分分析資料進行整合及對比的工作，期望能對臺灣附近海域表層沉積物分布的控制機制有更進一步的認識。
整體而言，臺灣附近海域表層沈積物分布主要受到臺灣本島陸源物質供應的影響，但各地特殊的海底地形、水文流場及生物聚落造成各具特色的表層沈積物分布情形。在臺灣西部沿海地區，沉積物來自於臺灣本島，因此沉積物的組成成分受到陸源物質及搬運介質，也就是河流的控制；至於臺灣海峽陸棚區，由於受到第四紀冰期海水面下降造成的沉積環境以及海底地形與海流的雙重作用，造成此區特殊的沉積物分布，在彰雲沙脊及觀音凹陷屬於第四紀冰期的殘餘沉積，而兩者之間為中國沿岸流帶來的現代沉積物，其礦物與化學組成與長江沉積物類似，因此更加確認Boggs et al.（1974）的論點；至於澎湖群島沿岸地區，同樣受到陸源物質的影響，除此之外，由於此區海洋生物富集，生物源的沉積物亦相當豐富。
