ABSTRACT KEYWORDS:Clarinet History. Schumann’s three romanzen, Brahms’s sonata in f minor op. 120 No. 1, Gershwin’s three preludes ,Revel’s fantasy. Since its first appearance in the orchestra in the 18th century, clarinet has become the important wind-instrument for the composers. Large repertoire and many beautiful passages have been written for this instrument’s unique tone quality. This thesis will focus on four compositions for clarinet. The first piece is Brahms’s f minor sonata op. 120 No. 1, which is considered one of the most sophisticated work for clarinet. The 2nd and the 3rd pieces are Schumann’s three romanzen and Gershwin’s three preludes. Both works are not originally composed for clarinet, however, have been played wildly by clarinets. These two compositions abound with characteristics of both composers. The last piece is the contemporary French composer Revel’s fantasy. The fantasy is constructed with the traditional French style while applying some modern compositional and performing techniques.
