ABSTRACT
The logistics industry in Taiwan has been under rapid development in the last decade, making it the Asia base for numerous multi-national organizations. Sensing such opportunity, number of the nation’s biggest less-than-truckload (LTL)companies decided to expand their scope of services to including different logistics services, thus become
professional 3PL providers. Hence, others felt that as the market becomes more competitive, heavy investments might not be economically plausible. The increasing number of companies that have moved base to China in recent years strengthens such belief. More importantly, such trend is expected to continue, especially after China’s ascension to the WTO (World Trade Organization).
Utilizing concepts of Product Life Cycle and Organizational Ecology, this thesis looked at the LTL industry in Taiwan, thus examined the general effects logistics has on companies’ financial performances. On the whole, a fairly remarkable jump in revenue performance was witnessed on companies that have expanded their service areas to including logistics services. Nonetheless, as the number of players in the market increases, profit margins continue to decrease, thus leading to an early mature stage. In light of this, companies have started to look into possibilities of market furtherance; among all, home delivery businesses appear to be most welcoming. It is also hoped that this study would help provides organizations with ideas and insights for future strategic planning, and decision making process.
