The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Cordyceps sinensis (CS) supplementation on energy utilization and endurance performance. Experiment was in double-blind and cross-over designed. Ten untrained healthy college students were divided into CS group and P group by randomly assignment in study. They took 6 CS or placebo capsules (400 mg CS extract / capsule) per day for 30 days. After supplementation, all of the subjects took two-stage endurance performance test on the static ergometer. They first performed steady state exercise at the intensity of 60% VO2max for 60 min, then sprinted till exhaustive with increasing 0.25 kp per min. Venous blood and respiratory gas were collected and analyzed every 20 minutes during exercise. There were no significant difference in concentration of glucose、lactate、free fatty acid、glycerol、respiratory exchange ratio (RER)、heart rate and exercise performance between groups. However, the RER at ex-40 min was lower than ex-20 min in CS group (0.93 ± 0.06 vs. 0.97 ± 0.08) (P<0.05). The RER in P group did not decrease significantly untill ex-60 min (0.94 ± 0.03 vs. 0.98 ± 0.07 ) (P<0.05). Furthermore, total energy came from fat in CS group is 50.7﹪higher than in P group (110 kcal vs. 75kcal). We concluded that energy source would shift from carbohydrate to fat earlier and body tend to use fat as energy metabolic substrate in exercise after CS supplementation.

Key words: Cordyceps sinensis, respiratory exchange ratio, free fatty acid, exercise performance
