The purpose of this study was to examine Williams & Andersen(1998) stress---injury model. Specifically, this study compared the differences of competitive trait anxiety, daily hassles, psychological skills and stress responses between injuried and non-injuried athletes. Also, this study examined the relationships among competitive trait anxiety, daily hassles, psychological skills, stress responses and injuries. Finally, the third purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the competitive trait anxiety, daily hassles, psychological skills on the relationship between stress responses and sport injuries.
This study recruited 107 injuried athletes and randomly sampled 107 non-injuried athletes and administered them with Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT; Martens, 1987), Daily Hassles Scale (DHS; Chen, 1995), Athletic Coping Skills Inventory-28 (ACSI-28; Smith, Schutz, Smoll, & Ptacek, 1995) and Athletic Positive States of Mind Scale (APSMS; Chang & Lu, 2001).
Descriptive statistics revealed that of all 107 injuried athletes, 43.9% suffered from strain, 23.4% suffered from sprain, 14.0% suffered from cramping, 11.2% suffered from abrasion, 2.8% suffered from blister, 2.8% suffered from fracture and 1.9% suffered from dislocation. A bivariate t-test and one-way ANONA analyses found that injuried athletes were higher on competitive trait anxiety and stress responses, but lower on psychological skills, but no differences on daily hassles. Correlational analyses also found sport injury was positively correlated with competitive trait anxiety and stress responses, but negatively correlated with psychological skills, but no correlation with daily hassles. Finally, path analysis found competitive trait anxiety and psychological skills predicted stress responses; competitive trait anxiety and stress responses predicted injury; and competitive trait anxiety and psychological skills moderated the relationship between stress responses and sport injury.
In general, this study supported Williams & Andersen(1998) stress and injury model. The author suggested that future research may include other variables in the Williams & Andersen(1998) model and examine the relationship between stress and injury. Also, author suggested that athletes and coaches should consider the potential effects of psychological factors in the prevention and rehabilitation of the sport injury pratice.
