The population dynamics of Rana swinhoana was monitored in a subtropical forest from August 1996 to August 2001 at the Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) site of Guandau stream in Taiwan. This study site was hit by an earthquake (7.3 on a Richter scale) on the September 21, 1999. I established a 330-m transect at the headwaters of a tributary (1-2 m in width) of Guandau Stream and censused R. swinhoana for 2 consecutive nights monthly. Four small reservoirs were in the lower section of the tributary. I used mark-recapture techniques to sample frogs along transects, with each individual was uniquely marked by PIT tags. For every animal captured, I recorded tag number, sex, snout-vent length, body mass of frogs, and location along the transect. The population size and recapture rate greatly declined after earthquake. Marked individuals before the earthquake were all disappeared. Frogs re-appeared about 8 months after the earthquake but the population size was much smaller. The body mass, size, and age of frogs after earthquake were significantly smaller or younger than that of before earthquake. Relatively more frog distributed in lower section of the transect line where reservoirs were located. The duration of reproduction was significantly prolonged. I propose that the differences of population dynamics before and after earthquake is in part related to the disappearance of water in the stream after the earthquake. Water disappeared probably due to the leakage of the water table, and the decline of water availability in turns causes the emigration or death of marked individuals. Water resumed somewhat in the rainy season, about 8 months after the earthquake, and the stream was subsequently recolonized by smaller, unmarked individuals.
