The purpose of this study is to explore the group effects on the family of the criminal victims and the implications of resilience for them. Six subjects, the family of the criminal victims, introduced by the Protection Institution of the Criminal Victims in Nan-Tou, are involved in a six-session group. The qualitative research method based on the ground theory is adopted in this study. In accordance with the purposes and the questions of the study, the effects of the group and the implications of resilience are explored by analyzing the word-by-word texts of the group process and the interviews after the group. The research results are as follows:
1. The four major influences of the traumatic events resulting from crimes on the mind and body of the family of the criminal victims include mood reactions, cognition reactions, behavior performance and how they feel for the culprit.
2. The five major influences of the traumatic events resulting from crimes on the living of the family of the criminal victims include remarrying, single parenting, interpersonal impacts, the financial predicament, and being in the plight of law suits.
3. Eighteen implications of resilience for the group members of the family of the criminal victims are found, including personality traits, positive thinking, self-encouragement, the sense of humor, the experience of frustration tolerance, the abilities to express and manage their mood, the confidence and ability to solve problems, being optimistic about the future, the ability to plan for the future, making use of the supporting interpersonal web, enhancing the interaction with children, good upbringing ways, instructing children to face death in a positive way, showing empathy and caring for others, the function of reorganizing family role, loving oneself, engaging in pastime activities, taking the initiative in seeking help, and enhancing the efficacy of working.
4. With regard to the whole group experience, the group members show changes in ten aspects. They become more independent and confident in themselves. They no longer suffer from missing the dead; instead, they improve the parent-children interaction, take positive attitude toward life, try new things, promote inner self-awareness, finish the unfinished business in the dream, open their mind, engage in their future life plans and introduce their group experience to others in the same boat. Some of them are implications of resilience seen during the process of the group. Others generate after the group intervention, which shows the efficacy of the group intervention.
Further suggestions are given for the reference of the related societies, counseling workers and further studies.
