New business ventures and their entrepreneurs are the prime movers in modern economic development. They foster technological innovations of industries, create new jobs, and generate new wealth for society. However, new ventures are inherently in the disadvantage because of newness and smallness, which means they might lack resources and stable relationships to compete. How should firms use their limited resources (e.g. cash, time) wisely to develop right, distinct, and powerful capabilities to stand out fierce competition? We did this research to find out the answer.
We adopted the qualitative method ─case study, and chose four successful IC design companies, ranked in Top 6 in Taiwan and Top 30 worldwide by their sales volume and size, to be our subjects. Based on Resource-Based View (RBV) and Social Capital Theory as well as our findings in these cases, we had the following prepositions:
1. A firm’s internal capabilities are positively and significantly associated with its performance.
2. A firm’s external networks are positively and significantly associated with its performance.
These two prepositions have sub-prepositions. In short, the factors in internal capabilities, including entrepreneurial orientation, technological capabilities, and financial resources invested, are all positively and significantly associated with its performance. And so do part of the factors in external networks, including networks with other firms, the founding team members’ social networks, linkages to government agencies. Otherwise, linkages to venture capital companies, universities/ research institutes, and commercial banks are supposed to be positively but found insignificantly associated with a firm''''s performance.
