Abstract Artistic Production Based on the Conceptions of “Being vs. Non-being” and “Abstractness vs. Concreteness” in Chinese Aesthetics The study explored the essence of traditional Chinese painting, which is the idea of Tao. Tao may be interpreted in terms of the conceptions of “Being vs. Non-being” and “Abstractness vs. Concreteness.” The study attempted to clarify these conceptions and hence to provide structure and direction for a series of paintings. In other words, the objectives of the study were fourfold: (a) to clarify and develop ideas for personal artistic production through exploring “Being vs. Non-being” and “Abstractness vs. Concreteness” conceptions in the field of philosophy, aesthetics, and art history; (b) to enhance the quality of the author’s paintings; (c) to analyze and interpret the works produced in terms of content, form, ideas, and techniques; and (d) to generate ideas and directions for personal artistic production in the future. In dealing with the aspect of theories, the study adopted philosophical method and the methods of art history. In creating the works, the conception and approach of qualitative thinking were applied. For the study, Tao as manifested by “Being vs. Non-being” and “Abstractness vs. Concreteness” was considered the core of the spiritual life in Chinese painting. The author tried to apply these conceptions to the works, and eventually hoped the works to be the embodiment of Tao. Therefore, both the idea of the works and their arrangement of the principles and elements were based on the theory and experience of Tao.
