Abstract
The purpose of this research is to explore how young children interpret the conceptions of friendship as they read picture books. I adopt the qualitative research perspective, using interviews as my major method of data-collection.
The findings of this research are as follows:
1. The main conceptions of friendship are "common play", "mutual activities", "material sharing", "one-way help", "mutual help", "friends’ conflicts", "equity", "reciprocity", "admiration", "personal characteristics" and "emotion and support".
2. The relation between children’s interpretations and content of picture books: There is a close relation between children’s friendship interpretations and what the authors try to convey. When children have experienced concepts the author conveys, or if children can understand these concepts, their interpretations mostly follow the content of the picture books. If children have never experienced the situations, or have no idea about the concepts, they often interpret very differently from the author’s concepts.
3. Young children’s interpretations as compared with what is found in the literature: Young children’s interpretations are similar with what is found in the literature. Both identify that principal friendship concepts are "mutual activities" and "common play". "Sharing", "help", "admiration", "personal characteristics", and "evaluation" are also very important. Therefore, this research firmly confirms that children can go deep into the level of emotion and interpret "emotion and support" in friendship.
4. The relation between children’s actual friendship and their interpretations from picture books: children’s actual friendship influences their interpretations of picture books. Their interpretations reflect the situations of actual friendship relationship. In addition, the social values instilled by adults are also reflected in children'' interpretations.
5. The factors affect children''s interpretations: There is no doubt that children''s personal backgrounds, experiences and friends will influence their interpretations. By voice of tunes, body language, and role-plays, children can manifest their emotions and concepts while reading picture books.
