本研究旨在探究溝通式教學觀對國小五年級學童英語口語溝通能力的影響，以及學童對此教學法的反應。
本研究採「不等組前後測設計」進行教學實驗，研究對象取自花蓮縣立花師實小五年級中的兩班學生，隨機分派為實驗組與控制組，其中實驗組進行為期八週十六堂課的溝通式英語教學，教學內容配合原班教材，與控制組所使用的教材相同，由研究者安排教學活動並親自授課；控制組則以原有的方式進行英語教學，且由原班老師授課。研究工具包括溝通能力評量檢核表、英語教學活動學童反應調查表。歸納研究結果摘述如下：
（一） 實驗組學生在「溝通能力評量檢核表」總得分表現上明顯優於控制組學生，單從語言層面上來看實驗組學生的表現與控制組學生的表現相較起來並沒有顯著差異存在，但在非語言層面上的表現，實驗組學生顯著優於控制組學生。
（二） 從個別子項目來看，實驗組學生在文法、流暢性、面部表情上的表現明顯高於控制組學生，至於其餘項目（腔調、發音、單字、內容創意、肢體動作）的表現上，實驗組與控制組學生相較下，並未有顯著差異。
（三） 學生基本上都喜歡溝通式英語教學的上課與評量方式，教法對學生的影響似乎比教材來的大，而學生的個人特質也似乎比英語程度更直接影響到其英語學習的學習效果。
（四） 溝通式英語教學普遍受到實驗組學生的歡迎和喜愛，且大多數學生覺得溝通式英語教學的教學活動還算有趣，這樣的上課方式輕鬆、沒壓力，口語評量也比較能考出他們的能力，而且的確使他們的英語學習的更好。
根據上述研究結果，對國小溝通式英語教學及未來研究提出建議。

This study aimed to explore the effect of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) on English oral communicative competence of the 5th grade students, and the students’ response through interview and questionnaire.
The method adopted in this research was “the pretest-posttest design” with two nonequivalent groups, which selected from the Laboratory School of National Hualien Teacher College. Two 5th grade classes were randomly assigned to the experimental group and the control group. Experimental group received “CLT instruction”, conducted by researcher for 16 times in 8 weeks, while the control group received “non- CLT instruction”, conducted by the original teacher. Instructional content was tied in with the assigned textbook. The research instruments included “checklist of evaluating communicative competence” and “Children''''''''s English Learning Response Questionnaire”. The results of this experiment are as follows:
(1) Students in the experimental group score significantly higher than those in the control group in the checklist of evaluating communicative competence. There is no significant difference between the two groups showed in verbal dimension, but in nonverbal dimension, the experimental group scores significantly higher than the control group.
(2) Students in the experimental group score significantly higher than those in the control group in grammar item, fluency item, and facial expression item. As to the rest of items (accent, pronunciation, vocabulary, originality, body language), There is no significant difference between the two groups.
(3) Basically, students in the experimental group like CLT. The way of teaching has more influence on students than the teaching materials do. And the individual characteristics much directly influence their English learning effects than their English level does.
(4) CLT is loved by most students in the experimental group. They think CLT activities are interesting, and they can learn English without pressure. Besides, they consider oral evaluation is more effective, and CLT helps them learning English better.
Further more, based on the results, some suggestions for teaching CLT in the elementary schools and further studies are also provided.
