本研究旨在檢驗演化論的「概括繁衍論」(inclusive fitness theory)可否解釋在生死攸關與日常情境時選擇哪個親屬施予援助的決定，並探討儒家孝道人倫觀在此等情境的作用。研究樣本為25歲以上成年人228人、大學生46人與國小五、六年級學生45人。利他情境包括十種緊急情境與十種一般情境。在每個情境中，受試者要從三個親人中選擇一個加以援助。研究結果顯示，在選擇援助對象時，人們會考量血緣親疏與繁衍價值兩個因素，尤其在緊急情境下，因為攸關對方性命的存活，所以利他選擇更會受到血緣親疏與繁衍價值的影響。例如，本研究發現，相對於一般情境，人們在生死攸關情境下，更傾向於選擇救援兒女而捨父母，此乃因兒女的繁衍價值一般而言較父母高的關係，尤其對年齡較大的人們而言，此一救子女而捨父母的傾向更強，而這更明確地支持概括繁衍論的主張，因為子女對年紀大的人而言，其基因繁衍價值較大。另一方面，本研究發現，在生死攸關情境下，選擇兒女為援助對象者的孝道觀念高於選擇援助父母者，而且三代同堂的受試者比小家庭受試者更傾向於選擇援救子女而捨父母。此二項結果皆不吻合從傳統文化價值觀的角度所作之預測。綜合而言，研究發現對演化論的「概括繁衍論」在解釋近親之內的利他抉擇上，提供了支持的證據。

The present study tested whether the altruistic choice among close kin under life-or-death conditions can be predicted by the inclusive fitness theory (Hamilton, 1964). Two hundred twenty-eight adults, 46 college students, and 45 5-6th grade elementary school students were administered a questionnaire that listed ten life-or-death emergency scenarios and ten everyday helping conditions. For each condition listed in each page, respondents were asked to choose one of three close relatives to rescue or provide help. It was found that people tended to choose to rescue or help a close relative who was more genetically related. The association between the degree of genetic relatedness and altruism was stronger under life-or-death conditions than it was under everyday conditions. Furthermore, the fitness value of a recipient was especially taken into account in life-or-death conditions in that the older respondents were, the more likely they were to rescue their children rather than their parents. This linear positive association between age and tendency to help children did not exist under everyday helping situation. The Confucian value of filial piety did not have significant effect on the decision to rescue one’s parents. In fact, respondents who chose to rescue children rather than parents had stronger attitude of filial piety. Respondents whose families included three generations also tended to choose to rescue their children. It seemed that traditional cultural value and practice were not inconsistent with the pursuit of fitness maximization.
