本研究旨在探討如何藉由施用有機質肥料來提昇甘比亞共和國稻作產量，藉由台中區農業改良場之材料提供與成份分析，及我駐甘比亞技術團對田間調查與資料採集，由1999-2000兩年之試驗調查結果發現甘比亞農村地區較常見的大宗有機廢棄物有牛、羊、驢及雞糞、稻殼、稻桿、米糠、落花生殼等，經進一步利用諸等材料研製作成適合甘比亞稻作栽培之有機質肥料配方為牛糞：稻殼：稻桿：米糠=40：40：10：10(%,v/v)。
在甘比亞sapu地區水稻施肥效率試驗中發現利用牛糞稻殼堆肥5公噸/公頃或田菁綠肥10公噸/公頃處理與化學肥料(N-P2O5-K2O：30.5-7.5-7.5公斤/公頃)處理之水稻株高、分蘗數及缺株率差異不顯著。水稻採收期生育性狀及產量之調查，1999年秋作水稻產量以使用堆肥、綠肥或化肥處理較高，分別較對照處理增加2∼9 %之多。2000年春作水稻亦以使用堆肥、綠肥或化肥處理較高，所獲得的水稻產量較高，分別較對照處增加10∼15%。由分析水稻採收期植株葉片養分含量結果顯示，以施用綠肥、堆肥或化學肥料等處理的植株葉片中氮、磷、鉀、鈣及鎂含量均較對照處理者略高，顯然綠肥或堆肥等有機資材經土壤微生物分解後所釋出的養分，在水稻生育期間可適時供應水稻吸收利用。由水稻採收期土壤肥力分析結果顯示，施用綠肥或堆肥，或使用化學肥料(尿素)等處理對土壤有效性磷、交換性鉀、鈣及鎂等含量有略為較高的肥力反應。
因此利用甘比亞農村地區較常見的大宗有機廢棄物，製作成品質穩定之牛糞稻殼堆肥，或適當栽培田菁綠肥等，可以取代部分化學肥料，供做為甘比亞水稻栽培之肥料資材。

The objective of this study is to increase the rice production of the Gambia through organic fertilizer application. Based on the analysis of the data provided by the Taichung District Agriculture Improvement Station and the field data collected on the study site in the Sapu area, Gambia, by the ROC Agriculture Technical Mission in 1999-2000, the results showed that a large quantity of animal dung from cattle, goat, donky, poultry and other farm wastes including rice hull, rice straw, rice bran and groundnut husk in the village was found and prepared for the organic compost. One of the two composts prepared to meet the fertilizer need in the Gambia included such ingredients as cattle dung, rice hull, rice straw and rice bran with a ratio of 40:40:10:10 (%,v/v)
Results of the study on the fertilization efficiency in paddy rice development show that in Sapu area of the Gambia there were no differences in the plant height, the number of tillers and the rate of missing plants among the treatments with 1) 5 mt/ha compost made of cattle dung and rice hull, 2) 10 mt/ha of Sesbania green manure, and 3) chemical fertilizers (N： P2O5： K2O = 30.7：7.5：7.5 kg/ha.) In the study of the characteristics of rice development at harvest, the results show that in the 1999 fall crop the yield was higher than the control by 2 — 9% when rice was treated with compost, green manure, or chemical fertilizers. Similar results were also observed in the 2000 spring crop; the yield was 10 —15% higher when rice was treated with compost, green manure, or chemical fertilizers.In analyzing the nutritional contents in the leaves of rice at harvest, the results show that the levels of N, P, K, and Mg in the leaves of the rice treated with green manure, compost or chemical fertilizer were slightly higher than the control. It demonstrates that the nutrients released from the organic materials in the green manure or the compost after the action of microorganisms were in time absorbed for use in rice development. Furthermore, in analyzing the soil fertility at the harvest of rice, the results show that there was a slight increase in soil fertility response in usable phosphorus and ion exchanges of K, Ca, and Mg when rice was treated with green manure, compost, or chemical fertilizers. Therefore, utilizing organic wastes, which were commonly available in large quantity at rural areas in the Gambia, to produce quality-stable compost made of cattle dung and rice hull or to cultivate Sesbania green manure can effectively replace chemical fertilizers to meet the nutritional requirements for rice production in the Gambia.
