Effects of Boardgame on Shy Children in Elementary School
Shin-yi Liao
Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to develop a suitable boardgame for shy children in elementary school, and to explore the immediate and delayed effects of the boardgame therapy.
Thirty-six shy children in grade 5th and 6th, eighteen boys and eighteen girls, were randomly assigned to the experiment group and the control group. The experiment group was divided into three small groups, arranged to receive twelve sessions of boardgame therapy. The three small groups participated in the boardgame counseling group led by the researcher twice a week during six-week time. Each session lasts 50 minutes. The control group received no treatment.
All subjects received the pretest, the posttest, and the follow-up test with the Personal Feeling Scale, the Self-Concept Scale, and the Children’s Social Skill Scale. The data were analyzed by one-way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA), with the pretest used as a covariate to test the hypotheses.
The major findings were as follows:
1. Boardgame counseling group could reduce subjects’ shyness and had immediate and delayed counseling effects.
2. Boardgame counseling group had immediate and delayed counseling effects on subjects’ whole self-concept, including the biological self, the mental self, and the social self as well.
3. Boardgame counseling group had immediate counseling effects on subjects’ social skill behaviors, including the sub-scales of corporative behaviors, positive assertion, empathy, and self-control. It had delayed effects on subjects’ social skill behaviors, including the sub-scales of positive assertionand empathy.
4. Individual analytic data shows the pleasure and the suitability for shy children in elementary school. The boardgame helps shy children encounter problems and difficulties in real life, reduce their shyness, adjust their self-conceptions, and increase their appropriate social skills in progress.
According to the major findings the study would propose some suggestions for practical implementation of school counseling and future studies.
