《阿帕拉契之春》，為美國現代作曲家柯普蘭的代表作品，節奏上受到斯特拉溫斯基的影響，變化多端、極為豐富。八個樂章組曲的形式，段落間表情、風格各有特色，多采多姿。音色粗獷、手法現代，而其中使用了民間鄉村的歌謠、宗教歌曲、舞蹈音樂的素材，加上豐富的配器手法，使得這一作品同時具備了各式各樣的風格，不但是一首膾炙人口、生動豐富的音樂作品，對指揮而言更具相當的挑戰性。
在研究方法上，擬使用分析、整理和詮釋來呈現。在第二章中首先對作曲家本身的背景作一整理研究，回顧其生平、創作歷程與音樂風格，以便對作曲家性格、思想、創作語法等整體背景有全面的認識。第三章則對《阿帕拉契之春》樂曲本身結構、織度、配器、和聲、節奏、速度等基本要素作仔細的樂曲分析。以上兩章研究的目的，即在印證指揮者對樂曲、音樂背景應有之深厚認識，因此不厭其詳，對各聲部、各樂句都做出精細的研究討論。
第四章則聚焦至指揮的詮釋。依據前二章探討所得之深厚瞭解，而決定了肢體動作方式，以及對音色、樂器演奏法、速度和音樂張力的使用。此章偏重主體性的詮釋以及質性分析，將筆者對本曲指揮的理想和心得，作一全面的敘述。
由以上三章探討、詮釋的過程，模擬、體現出指揮者面對一首樂曲演出時，應有的自我要求，以及準備的過程和方式，並由此導出結論，和最初的理想原則相應比較、互為印證。
