The objectives of this study are to investigate the structure of eyestalk ganglion, distribution of neurons, localization of MIH neurosecretory pathway, and the morphological changes of MIH immunopositive neuron (MIH neurons) during the molting cycle.
The eyestalk structure of Penaeus monodon composed three ganglia, the medulla externa (ME), medulla interna (MI), medulla terminalis (MT). Neurons existed on the surface of ganglia and connected to each other. There were seven types of neurons (type 1 to 7) classified by haematoxylin and eosin stain according to their sizes and aggregation of nuclear chromatin. MIH neuronsecretory pathway was localized by MIH antiserum of Metapenaeus japonicus. MIH neurons existed on the surface of MT and their axons originated from the MIH perikarya, formed an axon buddle, penetrated through the MT, and extended to the sinus gland, which was opposite to the MIH neurons. The types of MIH neurons were type 4, 5, 6 and 7, but not all of types of 4, 5, 6 and 7 neurons were MIH neurons. There were seventeen MIH neurons in one eyestalk, and the average of the minimum and maximum diameter were 19 and 24μm. There were no significant change in number and immunoreactivity of MIH neurons, but the ration of type 6 and 7 of MIH neurons increased during molting cycle.
