In Taiwan, the application of poor-quality materials and improper working procedure often results in delimitation, cracking, and heaving of flooring tiles a short period after construction. To solve such a problem, efforts have been made to improve the quality of tiles and adhesive materials for many years. In this study, the bonding mechanism was investigated by use of field observation and lab test. Thick-bed method for tile construction is popular in Taiwan. The strength and volume stability of adhesive materials are the major factors affecting the failure mode of flooring tiles. Form the statistics of field observation records, most failure cases occurs in the summer and delimitation failure is dominant. Both stone tile and ceramic tile were used for bonding shear test in the lab. It is shown that stone tile has better bonding quality than ceramic tile and the pattern of back surface is advantageous than stripe pattern for a given cementitious material.
