美國青少年小說家羅伯‧寇米耶是個相當具爭議性的作家。因為書中的黑暗、無奈、暴力、色情、粗俗的語句與沒有希望的結局，讓他的作品經常受到檢查制度的關注。但同時他也是相當受歡迎的重量級青少年小說作家，過去三十年，美國中學的課堂上最常討論的即是他的作品。不只如此，他的每一本作品幾乎都會出現在美國圖書館協會的好書推薦榜上。
本論文以羅伯‧寇米耶最受爭議的作品《巧克力戰爭》及《巧克力戰爭之後》為主，藉由討論書中主要人物的行為模式、價值觀及人際互動，看見作者透過作品表達對生命的看法及期待。
人的一生中為了要追尋及保有自我，在自己、他人與社會之間，要面臨無數的掙扎與爭鬥，直到生命終了。但人類對抗邪惡及強權的戰爭卻是永無止盡。《巧克力戰爭》一書所要強調的是「個人對邪惡的回應」和「個人對生命的掌控權」，鼓勵讀者勇敢面對生活中的邪惡，質疑社會制度的不合理，抵擋邪惡與強權的操縱，維持生命的平衡，用最大的努力掌控自己的生命。
雖然寇米耶擅長描寫殘酷灰暗的人生現實，但不表示他對人類感到失望。相反地，他希望讀者讀到書中描寫的悲劇之後，能積極地避免讓同樣的事件發生。讀者從他作品中得到的不是無力與絕望，而是更多面對現實人生的智慧。

American YA novelist Robert Cormier is famous for the controversy in his novels. His novels are usually under the attack by censorship because of the darkness, helplessness, violence, sex, rude words, and hopeless ending in the context. Meanwhile, he is a very important popular writer in YA literature. During the past thirty years, it is his novels that were listed most frequently on the book lists of American high schools. Moreover, almost each of his novels had been honored a Best Book for Young Adults by American Library Association.
This thesis is based on Cormier’s two most controversial novels, The Chocolate War and Beyond the Chocolate War. By discussing the behaviors, values and interaction of the main characters, the researcher tries to find Cormier’s opinions and expectation of life which are expressed through his novels.
Through the whole life, in order to seek and remain true to oneself, one has to face countless struggles and fights among oneself, other people, and society, until the death comes. However, the war between people and evil or authority is never-ending. “The individual’s response to evil” and “the individual’s right to control his/her life” are the main points of these two novels. The author encourages readers to face evil in life, to doubt the unreason of social system, to resist the control of evil and authority, to keep the balance of life, and to do their best to control their own lives.
Although Cormier is good at describing the cruel and dark reality of life, it does not mean that he is discouraged for life. On the contrary, he expects readers to avoid the same tragedies after reading his novels. What readers learn from his novels is much more wisdom to face the real life, not helplessness or hopelessness.
