企業過去利用土地勞力創造利潤的神話，今日早已不復存在，取而代之的，是更富價值的資訊智產。企業面對如此瞬息萬變的資訊來源，唯有及時掌握最新資訊，才能在競爭激烈的市場上領先群倫。企業圖書館由是在此種迫切的需求下應運而生，而企業圖書館員本身所獨具之核心能力，無疑是帶領企業安然渡過下一波知識經濟狂潮的絕佳優勢。
本研究以天下雜誌於2001年5月份特刊中，國內跨產業排名前500大企業為研究對象，兼採問卷調查之量化研究，與個案訪談之質性研究方法，針對已設置企業圖書館之資料中心負責人進行問卷調查，並從三個產業類別中各擇一所企業圖書館進行訪談，期藉此瞭解企業圖書館員於資訊資源、資訊組織、資訊檢索、資訊技術、資訊服務、管理能力、外語能力、及圖書資訊學專業等八大能力構面之核心要項；並探究目前國內企業知識管理之實施進程，與企業圖書館涉入知識管理之概況。
由問卷調查之分析結果可知，八大能力構面中最首要的核心能力項目分別是獲取資訊能力、整合各類型資訊能力、網路資源檢索能力、電腦軟體能力、顧客資訊需求分析能力、溝通、人際能力、英、日文外語能力等項；個案訪談的結果除佐證上述研究發現外，特別強調圖書資訊學專業背景是勝任企業圖書館負責人不可或缺的專業能力。
除獲知企業對圖書館館員核心能力之看法外，本研究經由問卷調查統計分析發現，企業規模、資料中心名稱、與是否具備專業人員等變數，均會對企業圖書館館館員所應具備之核心能力造成影響，凡此正反映出圖書館存在企業中之異質性與多變性。
知識管理在國內外學者大力疾呼之下，正準備在業界引爆一場前所未有的管理變革。問卷結果顯示，國內企業知識管理巨輪刻正開始啟動，企業圖書館參與其中，現階段雖以扮演內容之提供與管理者的角色居多，然在企業知識管理系統價值之體現上，已漸嶄露頭角，未來企業再不可忽視由企業圖書館來主導知識管理之趨勢。
最後就研究結果提出六項建議：一、重申圖書館在企業中之定位；二、建構企業圖書館館員核心能力基準；三、企業圖書館館員顧客服務導向之養成；四、規劃切合企業需求之圖書資訊學相關課程；五、推動企業圖書館成為知識管理之主導核心；六、應儘速成立專門圖書館專責組織，整合企業圖書館之各項資源。
