網際網路上各資料庫皆獨立發展,資料庫系統種類繁多且常不相容。因此,如何在不影響其分散性(distribution)、自治性(autonomy)與異質性(heterogeneity)下,正確而有效地分享及整合各異質資料庫,是一個重要的議題。
針對各資料庫異質性的問題,吾人提出利用元資料(metadata)儲存各種異質資料庫資訊,內容包括所有資料庫的綱要知識、綱要語意之轉換法則、查詢時的轉換法則、各資料庫的屬性資訊與表格資訊等。於資料交換與傳遞上,採用可跨平台及具擴充性的XML格式作為轉換媒介。
為了保持各資料庫的自治性,吾人提出包裝代理人(wrapper agent)的觀念。包裝代理人具備智慧型代理人(intelligent agent)與包裝程式(wrapper)的特性。包裝代理人建構於資料庫之上,自動收集資料庫的綱要(schema)資訊並轉換成XML資料格式;或是將資料庫查詢後的結果轉換成XML資料傳回。分散在各處的資料庫不用為了資料庫的整合,而調整任何本身結構。
本研究並與全球資訊網互相整合。在本研究所提出的機制下,本地資料庫的管理者不需對現有資料庫作任何更動,可保有本身的自治能力。系統管理者只要對元資料進行管理,即可輕易整合多資料庫系統內的資料,並於全球資訊網上呈現。
Since each Internet database has been developed separately, types of database are various and incompatible. Therefore how to correctly and efficiently share and inte-grate various kinds of heterogeneous databases without affecting their functions of distribution, autonomy and heterogeneity becomes a very important research topic.
As for the problem of database heterogeneity, we propose a concept that is to use the metadata as a storage to store various kinds of heterogeneous database information. Due to the great capabilities of the metadata storage, the schema semantic, the trans-formation rules of query, and the informations of database fields and tables can be stored in it. Besides, since its capability of crossing platform, the extensible XML for-mat can be used as the transform media for data exchanges and data deliveries.
For the problem of keeping the database autonomy, we propose the concept of "Wrapper Agent". Since the Wrapper Agent possesses the capabilities of Intelligent Agent and the Wrapper program, the Wrapper Agent established over the database can automatically collect the schema of the databases and transform them into XML format. The other capability of the Wrapper Agent is that it can also transform the query results into XML format and then send them back. In this way, the distributed databases are not necessary to adjust their own structures for the purpose of database integration.
Finally, our studies would merge into the World Wide Web. By using the mecha-nism proposed by this study, the manager of the local database would not be bothered to change anything in the existed database and still can keep autonomy of his database. The system manager would just only need to manage the metadata so that the data in the multi-database system can be easily integrated and displayed on the World Wide Web. Our research shows a very satisfied result.
