The objectives of this study are to look into the significance recognition and requirements of exercise instructors’ professional competency, and to analyze the recognition differences of exercise instructors from various demographic statistics samples toward the importance and requirement extents of exercise instructors’ professional competency. The collected information on exercise instructors’ professional competency will be concluded and used for a further reference of designing training curriculums for exercise instructors in the future. The subjects of this study are exercise instructors from Taipei Health and Fitness Club. Interviews were conducted with a custom-designed questionnaire titled “Significance Recognition and Requirements of Exercise Instructors’ Professional Competency.” The total of 300 questionnaires were handed out, and the number of valid replies was 221. After a careful statistics analysis, conclusions were drawn as follows: 1.Demographically speaking, the number of male exercise instructors (56.6%) in Taipei is slightly higher than that of female ones at present. Their ages vary from 25 to 29 years old (41.6%). Their years of work experience are 2 to 5 years (30.8%). The majority of exercise instructors (87.8%) hold a college or higher degree, and most of them are graduates from Physical Education or related fields (71.9%). Physical fitness Trainers are in majority (59.3%) among various job categories, and 39.8% of the study participants are certified in specialized exercise instructions in terms of professional certifications. 2.Exercise instructors showed remarkable knowledge on all aspects of significance extent of professional competency. “Instructional operations” had the highest average value (M = 4.49). Other professional proficiency categories in this study are in the order of “interaction”, “administrative management”, “work attitude”, “relevant knowledge”, and “data processing” (M = 4.38, 4.43, 4.30, 4.07, and 3.89). 3.Exercise instructors also showed remarkable proficiency on all aspects of requirements of professional competency. “Instructional operations” had the highest average value (M = 4.23). Other professional proficiency categories in this study are in the order of “interaction”, “administrative management”, “work attitude”, “relevant knowledge”, and “data processing” (M = 4.17, 4.10, 4.06, 3.88, and 3.70). 4.Exercise instructors’ knowledge on the significance extent of professional competency does not vary with work years, highest educational background, or field differences, but sex, age, job categories and professional certifications. 5.Exercise instructors’ knowledge on the requirements of professional competency does not vary with sex, ages, work years, highest education background, fields, and professional certifications, but job categories.
