網際網路的使用與應用在今日世界愈顯重要,而這一切全有賴於良好的基礎建設與維護,網管人員為了維護網路設備,必須常常存取網管資訊庫。為了減輕網管人員在查詢網管資訊庫的負擔,有學者提出遠端MIB物件查詢服務,打破傳統集中式的查詢方式,而改變為分散式的查詢方式來取得,但是此一架構並沒有良好的建立互信的機制,並且在架構上缺發延展性。
因為前述的方式缺乏讓使用者快速地加入分享的行列良好的機制,於是找尋各種解決方案,其中之一,就是利用近年來興起並已成熟的Web服務及其相關技術。我們希望利用Web服務技術來探索網管資訊庫,來改善傳統查詢管理資訊庫與遠端MIB模組查詢服務的缺點,而又能有效地保有分散式查詢的優點,並提供一個良好的分享機制,讓個人或組織能透過發佈MIB模組訊息,使網管人員能夠快速地取得網管資訊庫。
本研究除了提供視覺化的一致介面來瀏覽MIB模組外,更提供了一個分散式網管資訊庫查詢的方式,以降低網管人員使用傳統方式查詢網管資訊庫時的不便。除此之外,由於Web服務技術採用全球通行的標準:不限定任何程式語言開發,並且允許在各種作業平台上運行,所以Web服務技術可以很容易地和網管工具結合,因此,利用Web服務技術來探索網管資訊庫將可以有效提升網管工作的效率與減輕網管人員在查詢網管資訊庫的負擔。
Due to the fast growth of the Internet and the advance of new network technology, a variety of network devices have been deployed. Most network devices support the SNMP protocol, the de facto standard of network management. The management information base (MIB) is a collection of managed objects defined by SNMP. A lot of MIB modules have been defined for various management purposes. The specifications of those MIB modules are available in RFCs or documents provided by manufacturers. Usually, a network manager spends much time looking for the definition of a certain managed object in the sea of MIB modules. For the ease of search, a remote MIB item look-up service has been proposed[4][18]. The MIB look-up service is provided by a set of servers distributed in the Internet. These servers exchange MIB information with each other in a peer-to-peer fashion. Hence, the approach is not scaled well as the number of servers increases. Furthermore, the lack of a central directory for MIB modules also make the search of managed objects inefficient.
In this thesis, we propose a novel approach for MIB look-up services based on a web service model. A web service for MIB module discovery is developed using Sun’s JWSDP development toolkit. A MIB registry server is built to provide a directory service for MIB modules. Any MIB service provider can use the UDDI protocol to advertise its MIB service. Moreover, as a web service client, a web-enabled MIB browser is developed to provide MIB look-up services. The MIB browser sends SOAP messages to the registry server to find the locations of MIB modules. MIB modules are then retrieved from MIB service providers. Our approach can significantly reduce the overhead of looking for MIB modules in the web.
