關西-竹東地區位於臺灣北部，地質上處於西部麓山帶，屬於臺灣西部火成岩區。該區玄武岩以凸透鏡體夾於新第三紀沈積岩層，大多為帶狀，出露於中新世晚期的地層中，產狀以火山碎屑岩為主，熔岩流比較少，此外岩床、岩脈亦在此區出現。本實驗樣本採樣地點為關西鎮六畜窩錦山溪旁之露頭，樣本岩石經計算其應存礦物成分，依據玄武岩四面體分類屬於鹼性玄武岩類。
本實驗利用高溫爐及高溫高壓儀進行一大氣壓與1.0京帕壓力下實驗岩石學研究，一大氣壓實驗步驟先將岩石磨成粉末，置於白金囊包中，設定溫度後，將樣本放入高溫爐內，經過數小時不等之反應時間，然後加以驟冷。1.0京帕實驗步驟則為將岩石粉末置於金鈀管囊中，再放入電爐組合，加壓至1.0京帕後，通電加熱，經數小時不等之反應，完成實驗。將實驗後之樣本灌膠，磨成光片，用反射式顯微鏡做初步鑑定，再用電子微探針分析結晶礦物與玻璃成分。
實驗結果為此玄武岩在一大氣壓下之全融溫度約在1316℃，固相溫度低於1050℃，結晶順序為鈦鐵氧化物（1316℃）、橄欖石（1258℃）、斜輝石（1166℃）與斜長石（1092℃）。1.0京帕下之結晶順序為石榴子石（1350℃）、鈦鐵氧化物（1330℃）、橄欖石（1280℃）、斜輝石（1220℃）與斜長石（1110℃）。一大氣壓下玻璃成分中SiO2與CaO含量隨溫度降低而增加，MgO、FeO、Na2O與K2O含量隨溫度降低而減少。1.0京帕下玻璃成分中SiO2與K2O隨溫度降低而增加，MgO與CaO含量隨溫度降低而降低。由一大氣壓與1.0京帕之各溫度下玻璃成分的玄武岩四面體應存礦物成分圖，與前人所做的全岩分析成分比較，此區橄欖石矽質玄武岩與石英矽質玄武岩可在較低壓的環境（約1.0京帕至一大氣壓之間）經結晶分異而形成。
