The Study of Training Nondisabled Older Siblings to Teach Elementary Age Children with Mental Retardation Household Skills
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of training nondisabled older siblings to teach elementary age children with mental retardation household skills. The multiple baseline across subject of single subject research design was used. In the study, three students of The Taipei City Shuang-Yuan Elementary School and their older siblings were selected as research subjects. The research process was separated into three steps: the periods of the baseline design across, experimental intervention, and the follow-up. The data was analyzed with Shewart statistics, visual analysis, and time series C statistics. After the experimental research, the researcher interviewed the parents, schoolteachers, and three older siblings of the children with mental retardation for the satisfaction of the individualized instruction, and examined the social validity as well.
According to the study, the findings were as follows:
1. It has been found effective that the nondisabled older siblings teach the children with mental retardation doing the household skills.
2. The teachers, the parents and the siblings positively supported the effectiveness of training the nondiabled older siblings of children with mental retardation doing the household skills.
3. The parents showed confident in the companion of the children with mental retardation and their siblings. The parents were satisfied with that the nondiabled siblings made use of the strategies and skills they learned in other situations and informal interactions.
4. The teachers also mention that after the siblings teach the children with mental retardation doing the house works at home, they would generalize washing the wipers, cleaning the tables, and mopping the floors in school as well.
In addition to discussing the result of the research, the researcher of this study also made some suggestions for siblings teaching in practice and the future research, hoping it would be useful for the people who are interested in this area.
