字詞間的脈絡關係(包括聯想關係、語義關係)造成的促發效果(priming effect)如何發生,是了解字詞辨識(word recognition)之下認知機制的研究途徑之一。多年來對這類現象的解釋己累積出三重理論(tri-theory),複合線索(compound cue),以及語義成分重覆(semantic overlap)三種理論主張。這些都是從英文字詞研究發展出來的想法,而中文目前對此課題的研究規模只略具雛型,但因為具有英文少有的成詞脈絡(compound),所以Liu, Sue, & Wu(1998)提出以預期經驗為主的「時序接近性」主張,認為促發效果是一種在適當條件下喚起預期經驗的現象。本研究重新檢討「後向聯想促發效果」、「純粹聯想促發效果」、以及「語義相似促發效果」三種現象,探討這些課題中若包括成詞脈絡屬性,原來會有顯著效果的情況能否再重覆獲得相同發現。本研究發現的重點為:1.任何脈絡關係需要在能運用預期策略的條件下才有顯著效果。2.各種脈絡關係中,成詞脈絡對中文字促發效果的貢獻最重要,包括明顯的成詞屬性(如高頻詞、促發呈現順序符合正向閱讀情況)必有機會做為預期策略的依據,以及帶動同次實驗裡不成詞但有其它脈絡關係的嘗試反應。其中較特殊的是後向呈現成詞脈絡只會在特定條件下成為運用預期策略的線索,以及一次實驗存在兩種不同屬性的成詞脈絡時,讓受試者印象較深刻者才能造成顯著結果。本研究最後根據這些發現評論目前各種理論需要什麼樣的修正才能說明成詞脈絡造成的現象,並思考從研究促發效果了解字詞辨識認知歷程的價值。
