公共圖書館具有服務社區民眾、提供民眾一個終生學習環境職責，而瞭解民眾使用公共圖書館的動機將有助於圖書館提供更為完善且適合民眾需求的服務。因此，研究者以問卷調查、量化分析的方式，瞭解具有不同特質的臺北市立圖書館總館成人讀者的使用動機，並將研究結果作為公共圖書館規劃及設計讀者服務之參考。
本研究根據705份有效問卷予以分析，結果發現：
一、女性讀者較男性讀者願意花費較多的時間上圖書館以及有較活躍的借閱行為
二、在分析兩性利用公共圖書館的主要目的上，差異並不大，但在影響其利用的因素上，差異則較為顯著
三、年齡、學歷及職業對於讀者利用公共圖書館的使用動機具有顯著的影響性，其中並以年齡的影響性最大
四、性別、性別年齡、性別與學歷及性別與職業在讀者使用動機上的影響層面不同
五、女性讀者樣本的使用動機較男性多元而顯著
六、女性讀者樣本較男性更為認同公共圖書館的存在性及提供資源的角色
研究者建議公共圖書館可以參考本研究中讀者樣本對於各項使用動機的看法，例如在本研究中所發現具有不同基本特質的讀者，對於利用圖書館的動機也會隨之有所差異，如職業為中小學教師的讀者則是為了工作需求等等。針對這些差異進而做適當的調適以更加強或開發讀者的使用動機，以增加讀者利用的機會。

The public libraries serve for community people and provide them a lifelong learning environment. Thus, to explore the users’ motivations would contribute to help libraries to provide the better service and to fit the users’ needs.
In order to understand user’s motivations, it is important to investigate all kinds of the users’ motivations. This research was performed in Taipei Municipal Main Library with questionnaire, to find out users’ motivations with different characters. The results from the study would be offered for improving the service quality of libraries.
Based on 705 valid questionnaires, the six main findings are generated into six items, just as follows:
1.Female users spent more time in the library and borrowed more books than male did.
2.There were no differences in main purposes of using the public library from genders, but it was significant that gender was an important factor to influence the degree of making use of libraries.
3.The factors - age, educational background, and occupation - were significant in the motivations of using the public libraries. Among them, age was the most significant factor.
4.The gender, gender＆age, gender＆educational background, and gender＆occupation affect different dimensions on users’ motivations.
5.The motivations of female respondents were more various and obvious than male ones’.
6.More female than male users recognized the important of existence of the public libraries and the role of providing resources.
From the results of this research, there were some suggestions for the public libraries. This research helped us find out that the users with different characteristics had various motivations on using the libraries. For example, the teachers of elementary and junior high school use the library to satisfying their information needs of job. According to these differences of users’ motivation, the librarians should make good use of these differences to enhance the use of libraries.
