This research aims to investigate the parent involvement of the music gifted and talented students and the current situation of school education, analyze the discrepancy between authenticity and expectation, and furthermore assess the difficulties these parents encountered for the purpose of getting more administrative support.
Questionnaire survey is adopted in this study. Research targets are mainly focused on the parents of the music gifted and talented students in the elementary schools in Taiwan area during the year of 2003. The obtained information is analyzed through Group Statistics, Independent Samples Test, T test, and Multiple Response. Synthesizing the research results, we find that
1.The Social and economical status is a crucial factor that affects the parent involvement. It affects the item of “the guardian’s role”. The parents of the average or higher social status are often more active in the involvement than those in the lower social status.
2.The gender of the students does not have a remarked influence on the parent involvement in school education.
3.The students’ grades only affect the item of “the guardian’s role”. The parents of the third graders are more active in the involvement than those of the sixth grades.
4.These parents expect to involvement the school education than now.
5.The parents of the music-gifted and telented students are unable or unwilling to participate in school education because
(1)the time of the school activities does not fit their needs;
(2)they do not have time to join in the school activities;
(3)they do not have enough capacities and skills to be involved in their children’s education.
6.The parents of the music gifted and talented students think that the best three ways to enhance the parent involvement are
(1)the school authorities should provide parents with the methods for participating in their children’s education as well as the requisite guidance;
(2)the school authorities should encourage the cooperation between teachers and parents from all aspects;
(3)the school authorities should promote the parents’ participation in children’s education by all means.
Base on the research result, we hope to provide some suggestions and comments to the education authority, school authorities, and parents of the music gifted and talented students as well as the coming researchers.
