嚴重急性呼吸道症候群(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS)重創兩岸三地,且其高傳播力造成全球之恐慌,因憂心其捲土重來,而急欲尋求有效之控制方法。故本研究選擇與SARS病毒相似之豬生殖與呼吸綜合症(Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, PRRS)病毒進行實驗,其與SARS病毒歸於同目且均為具有封套之RNA病毒,因此具有相似之病毒特性。將病毒PRRS與蒙脫石作用後,使用高敏感度之反轉錄─聚合酶鏈鎖反應(Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction, RT-PCR)檢測法,結果發現蒙脫石具有吸附病毒之能力,其後利用MARC-145細胞與蒙脫石及竹醋作用後之PRRS病毒進行攻毒實驗,以間接螢光抗體(Indirect Fluorescent Antibody, IFA)染色法與穿透式電子顯微鏡(Transmission Electron Microscope, TEM)觀察細胞,證明經蒙脫石及竹醋處理後之PRRS病毒已失去感染能力。
