華裔美國文學前鋒趙健秀(Frank Chin)的《龍年》 (Year of the Dragon)一劇(1974),以七零年代唐人街為背景,描寫一個華裔家族新年假期發生的種種衝突;後起之秀黃哲倫(David Henry Hwang)也以呈現華裔美國文化的劇作享譽, 但是趙健秀曾經針對黃哲倫的作品《蝴蝶君》(M. Butterfly)提出嚴厲批評。趙健秀在〈真假亞裔美國作家盍興乎來〉(Come All Ye Asian American Writers of the Real and Fake)一文中指出,黃哲倫的作品是假的華裔美國文學。雖然一樣展演華裔美國文學, 但是趙和黃卻在文化政治(性別政治, 種族政治)等方面形成對峙局面。世代差異的風波之後, 黃的2001年作品《花鼓歌》﹝Flower Drum Song﹞重新編寫六零年代羅傑斯與漢默斯坦﹝Rogers and Hammerstein﹞的同名劇作《花鼓歌》,將故事背景由中國新娘嫁到美國的故事,改寫成女主角躲避文革迫害,逃到美國落地生根的故事。

黃哲倫改寫以唐人街為背景的《花鼓歌》,一方面回應了白人劇作家 羅傑斯與漢默斯坦,另一面也回應了華裔美國文學前輩趙健秀的批評。藉著改寫白人的劇本,黃認同了趙的種族位置,而藉著回應了趙,黃展現出唐人街文化政治的更多可能性(如,多種華裔美國女性的主體性, 不可以輕易化約)。本人希望再研究中討論這兩位作家的觀點與功過,並討論兩者筆下的唐人街,究竟是一個讓美國的中國人得到歸屬╱逃避歸屬的場域(site);或是一個白人社會異國情調下的奇景(sight)。

本論文的將先回顧美國華人社會的歷史,因為在這兩部文本中,包含了許多近代美國華裔在美國政府法律,以及歷史事件的影響;其次將回顧趙健秀的論述在亞美文學脈絡中的爭議,以及趙健秀、黃哲倫之間的岐異。由於《龍年》的劇本具有強烈的歷史脈絡,論文將由歷史和角色的關係出發,從角色身上去發現歷史及環境對他們的影響;而《花鼓歌》的背景分析,則將由演出文本的演進作為出發點,討論這個膾炙人口的文本從小說,舞台,電影,乃至於黃哲倫改編的脈絡和過程。本論文亦將比較趙健秀《龍年》和黃哲倫《花鼓歌》兩部作品中對華裔族群各層面的再現,包括:國族方面,性別方面的比較,以及兩部作品中對於「食物」象徵的戲劇呈現。最後將討論,今天的唐人街,從一個種族聚集地,轉變成一個「主題公園」,此事實對應在這兩齣劇作中的不同面向,並比較趙健秀和黃哲倫在戲劇中處理華裔族群「刻板印象」的不同策略。
