老年人口在家庭中扮演之角色以與傳統有所不同，隨著婦女勞動參與率提昇、雙薪家庭增多、父母離婚、喪偶與未婚懷孕等因素，有越來越多的孫子女是委由祖父母來照顧。綜合國內外相關研究發現，祖父母在照顧孫子女的過程中，往往需改變生活中既定的步調，以提供孫子女完善的照顧品質，而其所經歷的教養責任、調適角色的改變，以及在身心健康與生活上所面臨的影響皆是值得重視的。基於此，本研究利用Erikson心理社會發展理論（Erikson’s eight stages of psychosocial development）以及社會交換理論（Social exchange theory）為學說依據，旨在（1）瞭解隔代教養祖父母之「相關因素」、「健康狀況」、「生活滿意」之現況。（2）探討隔代教養祖父母之「健康狀況」、「生活滿意」在不同隔代教養祖父母「相關因素」之差異性。（3）瞭解隔代教養祖父母健康狀況與生活滿意之相關性。（4）瞭解隔代教養祖父母在教養孫子女後，對於健康與生活滿意的影響。
本研究採問卷調查法（Survey），以立意方式抽取台灣中部地區（台中市、台中縣、南投縣、彰化縣、雲林縣）國民中學（一到三年級）隔代教養學生之祖父母為研究對象，實得321份有效樣本。研究工具包括「SF-36健康狀況量表」、「生活滿意量表」、「個人背景調查表」。施測所得資料以次數分配、百分比、平均值、標準差、t-test、單因子變異分析、薛費事後比較、皮爾森相關積差進行分析。內容分析乃用於處理開放性問題。研究結果如下：
1. 隔代教養祖父母之「健康狀況」呈現偏低情形（M=59.68，總量表為100分）。
2. 隔代教養祖父母尚滿意於自己的生活（M=3.10，五點式量表）。
3. 隔代教養祖父母之「健康狀況」，在「教育程度」、「經濟狀況」（主要經濟來源、自覺經濟狀況）、「有無人協助帶孫」、「孫子女年齡」、「教養動機」與「教養意願」上達顯著差異。經薛費事後比較發現，「高中、高職之教育程度」、主要經濟來源為「自己有收入或由子女提供」、且自覺經濟狀況在「相當充裕」與「大致夠用」、「有人協助帶孫」、「非常願意與願意之教養意願」之隔代教養祖父母，有較良好的健康狀況。然而，隔代教養祖父母健康狀況在「祖父母性別」、「祖父母年齡」、「教養目前孫子女之時間」、「教養孫子女數」、「血緣關係」、「孫子女性別」與「隔代教養類型」上並無顯著差異。
4. 隔代教養祖父母之「生活滿意」程度，在「性別」、「教育程度」、「經濟狀況」（主要經濟來源、自覺經濟狀況）、「有無人協助帶孫」、「教養孫子女數」、「隔代教養類型」、「教養動機」與「教養意願」上達顯著差異。經薛費事後比較發現，「男性」、主要經濟來源為「自己有收入或由子女提供」、且自覺經濟狀況在「相當充裕」與「大致夠用」、「有人協助帶孫」、「局部隔代教養」、「教養動機為關愛、喜歡孫子女」、「教養意願為非常願意」之隔代教養祖父母有較佳的生活滿意。然而，隔代教養祖父母之生活滿意在「祖父母年齡」、「教養目前孫子女之時間」與「血緣關係」、上並無顯著差異。
5. 隔代教養祖父母之「健康狀況」與「生活滿意」呈現高度正相關（r=.55，p＜.001）。
6. 祖父母認為在教養孫子女後，以生活困擾多（如：面臨經濟問題、日常生活改變、失去個人時間等），健康走下坡（如：身體健康變差、面臨情緒問題、壓力負擔等）之負面影響佔多數（33.33％，N=321）、其次為沒有影響（23.98％）、而認為精神有寄託的則佔8.41％。
最後根據研究發現，對隔代教養的祖父母、父母親、學童、學校教育者、社會輔導機構與未來研究提出具體建議。

The traditional role of the aging population has already changed because of the increasing of female working population and the double-income families, divorces, parental death, and teenage pregnancy. There are more and more younger children who are taking care by their grandparents instead of their parents.
Related studies both from Taiwan and us showed that grandparents have to change their lifestyle in order to provide a better quality to take care of their grandchildren. During the grandparenting process, the pressures grandparents have encountered are not only physical, but also psychical such as upbringing responsibility, and adjusting to the changing role.
According to the Erikson’s eight stages of psychosocial development and the the social exchange theory, the purposes of this study were: (1) to understand the current status of “ personal background ”, “ health status ” and “ satisfaction with life ” of grandparents ; (2) to examine the difference on grandparent’s “ Personal Background ” , “ Health Status ” and “ Satisfaction with Life ” ; (3) to investigate the relationship between “ Health Status ” and “ Satisfaction with Life ” of grandparents raising grandchildren; and (4) to understand the effect of raising grandchildren on grandparent’s “ health status ” and “ satisfaction with life ”.
The target population of this study was grandparents whose grandchilds studying at junior high schools (first to third grade) in the middle of Taiwan. Through purposive sampling, a total of three hundred and twenty-one valid questionnaires were returned. The questionnaires included “ SF-36 Health Survey ” , “ Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) ”, and “ Personal Background Questionnaire ” . Data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 for Windows by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe method, Pearson product-moment correlation, and content analysis for the open-ended question. The results are as follows:
(1)“ Health Status ” of grandparent was below low level (M=59.68 on one hundred point scale).
(2)“ Satisfaction with Life ” of grandparent was between “slightly agree” and “agree” (M=3.10 one five-point Likert scale).
(3)Grandparent’s “ Health Status ” differed as a function
of educational level, economic status (primary source of
economic, perceived economic status), grandchildren’s age, raising helper, raising motivation, and raising willing.
(4)Grandparent’s “ Satisfaction with Life ” differed as a function of gender, educational level, economic status (primary source of economic, perceived economic status), number of grandchildren, raising helper, type of grandfamily, raising motivation, and raising willing.
(5)There was a significant correlation between the relationship of “ Health Status ” and “ Satisfaction with Life ” of the grandparent ( r=.55，p＜.001).
(6)After raising grandchildren, grandparent reported that “disturb on life” (financial problem, alter routines and plan, decline in time for themselves), “decline in Health” (physical problem, emotional problem, feeling pressured ) are the most serious problem they have (33.33％，N=321). Then, some other grandparents stated no effect (23.98％). Only few grandparents reported that “having reward” from raising grandchildren (8.41％).
According to the findings of this study, several suggestions are provided for those who are engaged in grandparenting.
