本論文著重梭爾提士分析策略的運用。梭爾提士在《教育概念分析導論》一書中，針對教育概念本身不易釐清的基本問題，提出澄清概念的分析策略：歸類型態分析（generic type analysis）、辨異型態分析（differentiation type analysis）與條件型態分析（conditions type analysis）。本論文將運用此分析策略，針對「紀律」與「懲罰」這組詞語在教育上的使用，進行概念分析。
關於「紀律」與「懲罰」的分析，國內的學者，多半會想到英國教育哲學家皮德思（R. S. Peters）在道德教育理論，針對「紀律」與「懲罰」的說明。但是，有鑑於皮德思的理論在國內已有多人研究，同時，皮德思的概念分析，在分析技巧的使用上並沒有清楚的步驟。對於國內從事一般教育工作的人員，想要從實務的領域去運用分析的技巧，卻很難辨析其適當的範圍與界線。因此，儘管皮德思在道德教育思想，於概念澄清方面，有相當豐碩的成果。但是，本論文主要在嘗試一般教育工作人員對於分析方法的使用，如果能藉由分析技巧的命名、分析策略與步驟的說明，是否就更能掌握分析思考的方式，進而澄清教育的相關概念。所以，採取梭爾提士的教育概念分析策略，捨棄皮德思的概念分析法。
此外，對於「紀律」與「懲罰」的討論，在政治、法律、社會與宗教等領域均有豐富的論述。但是，本論文所使用的分析策略，主要是進行教育概念澄清的工作，因此，將「紀律」與「懲罰」這組概念的討論，僅限定在學校教育的範圍。透過哲學的分析，將「紀律」與「懲罰」這組概念的誤用，所造成的教育問題得以釐清。
