The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between children’s depression and the type of family interaction. Selected variables from a study of “Child and Adolescent Behaviors in Long-term Evolution (CABLE), 2003 ” was need for secondary data analysis. The study subjects consist 2,449 sixth graders, 2,034 fathers and 2,238 mothers. Statistical methods include factor analysis, cluster analysis and multiple logistic regression. It was found that 67.3% of children have had the feelings of “unhappy and upset” , 54.4% of children have had the feelings of “it is difficult to do things”, and 54.2% of children have the feelings of “no motivation to do anything” in two weeks. Children who were girls, resided in Hsinchu County, had mothers with negative psychological state, and had violent fathers were more likely to feel depressed. The types of family interaction include: “cold monitorship”, “strict discipline”, “supportive protection”, and “frequent conflict”. Children from the families of “strict discipline” and “frequent conflict” had the highest level of depression. Children from the families of “supportive protection” had the lowest level of depression. Based on these findings, it was suggested that teachers and parents should pay greater attention to children’s depression. Those who at high risk of becoming depressive children, the multi-stratifies such as parental education, formal curriculum, and extracurricular activities can be used to promote children and their parents’ psychological health.
