ABSTRACT
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is the oldest and most frequently used method for geotechnical exploration in North America, United States and Asia region. SPT provides a measure of soil penetration resistance through measured blow counts “N”. However, the application of SPT “N” values as an empirical formula to predict static pile capacity is too conservative and often underestimates the actual static pile capacity measured from field results (J.E. Bowles, 1997). An attempt to modify the prediction of static pile capacity formula based on SPT “N” values developed by Meyerhoff (1956, 1974) is made in this research.
A total numbers of nine precast concrete driven piles each from Taiwan High Speed Rail Project (THSRP) Contract D290 and Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit Project (MRT) restricted to Kaohsiung area were selected from the pile static load tests database supplied by Excellent Engineering and High Technic. Back-calculated the ultimate capacity of the selected piles (from the enclosed subsoil investigation reports) by utilizing the static analysis method and SPT “N” values, then compared to the measured “interpreted failure capacity” from static load test results defined by using Davisson’s Method, Chin’s Method, De Beer’s Method, Brinch Hanson’s 80% Criterion, Butler & Hoy’s Method, Fuller & Hoy’s Method, Terzaghi’s Method and AASHTO (1992) Criteria.
A modified SPT “N” values agreement is established to demonstrate better accuracy of axial pile static capacity prediction compared to measured static load test capacity.
