Building business alliance relationship and developing Internet-based information systems (IBIS) are considered as effective competitive strategies in recent years. Many studies found that they will bring enterprises a lot of competitive advantages.
The study tries by using literature review and case studies to explore current business alliance practices in Taiwan and to reveal the demand and alliance performances for applying IBIS systems in the business alliance activities.
By the reviewing related literature of the alliance activities and electronic business, we collect eight activities including communication, human resources support, equipment sharing, technology sharing, information sharing, knowledge sharing, customer sharing and finance support activities. The major findings of case studies include: (1) communication activities and information-sharing activities are the most appropriate activities to apply the IBIS systems in business alliances;(2) the adoption decisions of the IBIS systems are dependent on the degree of support among the allied partners and the technology capabilities they possess; (3) there are three key factors that may hinder from the IBIS application for business alliance activities, likes the lack of trust in Internet security.
Based on the result of case study, beside the “financial support activities”, other seven alliance activities were considered as system demand for developing a prototype of the IBIS system. At last, we summarize the findings, point out the important modules that enterprises can use to increase the efficiency of business alliance activities. In addition, we also suggest managerial implications for the practices and recommend some directions of furture research.
