過去關於設計媒材與設計過程的研究中,數位媒材的精確度確實造就了自由形體建築的實現,但突破與創新經常伴隨新問題的發生,而關於自由形體建築的研究仍十分有限,因此本研究將從數位媒材以及自由形體設計的相關研究推導出新的研究議題,並試圖尋求與新媒材虛擬實境結合的可能性。

本研究試圖透過VR cave來介入自由形體的建築設計過程,並搭配目前既有之設計媒材,期望藉由設計與人的互動性,輔助設計者更容易掌握自由形體設計,探討空間感知與設計方法的關聯性,進而獲得自由形體設計流程中各類設計媒材的重要性分析歸納與整理。

當設計問題是既有設計媒材所無法掌握的時候,就必須倚賴更新的設計媒材來解決問題,也就是以新媒材來介入其設計過程。本研究試圖先以案例分析的方式整理歸納出自由形體設計流程中各類媒材的重要性分析,再以VR cave介入研究案例的設計過程,觀察原本的設計流程是否受到新媒材的影響而產生不同的設計思考,以瞭解新的設計媒材VR cave是否能解決過去數位媒材所無法掌握的設計問題,最後再透過一項空間實驗,修正與確認VR cave介入後的自由形體設計流程中各類媒材的重要性分析。
