本研究主要目的在比較家有智障者之家庭功能與一般家庭之家庭功能，並探討智障者個人特質、家庭特質等因素與智能障礙者家庭功能的關係。
本研究以問卷調查法進行資料蒐集，使用工具為「家庭功能量表」。研究對象為一般家庭與智能不足家庭，兩類學生家庭的家長，抽樣選自台灣地區24所學校與2所學前機構；受試包含國立啟智（特殊教育）學校智能障礙類、國立或縣市立普通學校特教班學生家長453名，與普通學校幼稚園、國小、國中、高級中學、職業學校等一般學生家長421名，合計共為874名。所得結果以獨立樣本t檢定、單因子變異數分析、事後比較、迴歸分析等統計方法來進行資料分析。
本研究主要發現如下：
一、智能障礙者家庭的家庭功能運作情形與一般家庭差異不大，整體而言，二者都在正常範圍。
智障者之家庭功能與一般家庭在家庭管理、自我表露、角色行為控制、問題解決、情感反應，五因素沒有差異。而在家庭氣氛、一般功能兩因素有差異，智障者家庭氣氛運作功能與一般功能較低。
二、智能障礙者個人特質中的障礙程度、伴隨障礙，對其家庭功能沒有影響。性別方面，男性智障者家庭的問題解決功能較差。
三、智能障礙者年齡對其家庭功能沒有預測力。
四、智障者家庭特質方面，不同婚姻狀況、子女就讀情形、與父母居住型態、家庭發展階段的家庭功能沒有差異。
五、智障者家庭特質方面，不同社經地位、智障人口數、收入來源與月總收入的家庭功能有差異。
低社經地位家庭的家庭功能較其他階層者為差；有一位以上智障者家庭的功能較差；收入來源方面，雙薪家庭功能顯著優於單薪與非單薪雙薪之其他家庭；月總收入24,000以下的家庭功能顯著低於45,001-150,000之家庭。
本研究並根據研究結果，對智障者家庭、家庭教育單位、學校輔導單位與後續研究者提出相關建議。

The study investigated the family function of the mentally retarded children, compared it with that of the nonhandicapped children and explored the relationship between family function and the personal and family characteristics of the mentally retarded children.
The instrument used in the study was revised Family Assessment Device. The subjects answering the questionnaire were parents of 453 mentally retarded students, aging 3.5~24, and parents of 421 general students, aging 3.5~24. The data were statistically analyzed by Independent-Samples T Test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffé method and multiple-stepwise regression.
The main findings were as follows:
1. There were no significant difference between the family function of the mentally retarded students and that of the general students on the 5 dimensions of family function, including family management, self revelation, role behavior control, problem solving and affective response. Significant difference emerged on the 2 dimensions: general function and family atmosphere.
2. No significant difference emerged in family functions between different degree of disability and accompanying disabilities; but the family function of problem solving of male mentally retarded students was worse than that of female.
3. Family function could not be predicted by the mentally retarded students’ age.
4. There was no significant difference in family functions between various parents’ marriage, schooling, living with parents, and stage of family development.
5. Significant difference existed in family functions among different family social status, handicapped population, income resource, and total monthly income.
The family function of mentally retarded students with low social status, with one more handicapped family member, with only one or no wage earner, with lower monthly income was worse than that of those with different family characteristics .
Based on above findings, this study provided some suggestions for families of the mentally retarded students, organizations of family education, schools, and future research.
