Abstract
The traveler in a Nutshell -Art Works by Chiang , Chun - Te
“O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space.” This sentence is taken from Scene 2, Act 2 of Hamlet by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). This means that the size of a man’s mind is determined whether he or she is mentally free. When Hamlet is no longer bothered by the revenge for the murder of his father, he can count himself a king of infinite space even if he is bounded in a nut shell. On the contrary, even he is in a country as large as Denmark, once he is obsessed by the idea of revenge, he would be like in a choking prison. Based on this notion, I make myself own the infinite space with painting. In this kingdom, I am a king of entirely free mind. The culture has continued for thousands of years and encountered numerous resistance, revolutions, and compromises. A great amount of people have dedicated to the art with their entire lives and express their viewpoints on the art and the ages with their works. Furthermore, this is merely my discussion of my composition. With only pious and little attitude as well as current knowledge and personal ideas, I can record the procedures of mental pondering during my composition.
I think over my composition in metaphysics (philosophy) view of painting. With the sympathetic response found in “denotation and connotation” in semiology by Roland Barthes, I interpret the painting forms I select in creating my works. Also through the summon from Also Sprach Zarathustra by Nietzsche, I expect to be loyal to myself in the rest of my life.
In the Introduction in Chapter I, I explained my “background and motif,” “approach and limitation,” and “structure and extension” of my personal creation. From Section 1 of Chapter II—Major Discussion on the Theoretical Basis, I arrange the sequence of my creation ideas. Section 2 is Ideas and Forms of Creation. Later in “Body Memory” in Chapter III, I discuss the messages given from my body and realize the existence of my body in the transformation procedures of the space. With the existence of the body, I enter the virtual facet of the space at this time where I am in. In Chapter IV, Virtual/Ego, I discuss the conflicts and contradiction among ego, reality and virtual. Chapter V is the Analysis of Works of myself, including two parts of contents and forms. Finally, Chapter VI is to make “conclusions” for this work.
