本研究自92年11月起至93年1月止,分別在彰化縣福寶地區與嘉義縣鰲鼓溼地進行短耳鴞(Asio flammeus)食繭的收集和環境鼠種組成的調查工作。兩地共收集到89個短耳鴞食繭(福寶 N=34; 鰲鼓 N=55),平均每個食繭內有2.07隻獵物,獵物平均重量為27.9 g。食繭內記錄的獵物種類有赤背條鼠(Apodemus agrarius)、月鼠(Mus caroli)、小黃腹鼠(Rattus losea)、白齒鼩(Crocidura spp.)、鬼鼠(Bandicota indica)、小雲雀(Alauda gulgula)和蝗蟲(Hieroglyphus sp.); 白齒鼩和鬼鼠僅在鰲鼓溼地的食繭中出現。獵物出現的數量比例以小獸類佔大部份,分別為91.7%(福寶)和96.8% (鰲鼓)。兩地食繭內獵物的組成比例並不相同,鼠類獵物在食繭中的出現比例和環境鼠種的組成比例不同。月鼠在短耳鴞的食繭內出現比例最高(福寶=57.5%; 鰲鼓=62.5%),環境中出現數量最優勢的物種在福寶地區和鰲鼓溼地分別為小黃腹鼠(59%)和赤背條鼠(44%)。兩個地區的月鼠和赤背條鼠在食繭內出現比例均高於在環境中族群的相對數量,小黃腹鼠在食繭內出現比例則明顯低於環境中的族群數量。推測影響短耳鴞食繭內不同種獵物出現的比例差異原因,除了獵物在環境中族群數量的多寡外,同時還受到獵物體型、棲息環境和短耳鴞捕獲成功率等因子共同作用的結果。
During November 2003 to January 2004, I collected the pellets of over-winter Short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) from Fubon farm and Augu marshland respectively. In addition, I conducted abundance and composition survey of small mammals fauna and attempted to realize the relationship between prey and predator. Eighty-nine pellets had been accumulated from both localities (Fubou: N=34; Augu: N=55), and the number of prey items in each pellet averaged 2.07. Mean biomass of each prey is 27.9 g. The prey occurrence index of pellets from high to low concentrated on small mammal, the percentage is 91.7% in Fubou and 96.8% in Augu, secondary Alauda gulgula and Hieroglyphus sp., both Crocidura sp. and Bandicota indica restricted in Augu marshland.

However, the pellet analysis does not match with the composition of small mammals in field of Fubou and Augu. For instance, both Rattus losea and Apodemus agrarius were dominance species in both Fubou and Augu. But primary prey contents of Fubou and Augu prey was Mus caroli, 57.5% and 62.5%, respectively. Comparing abundance of small mammal in field with composition of pellets, I found that small mices, such as Mus caroli and Apodemus agrarius were significantly higher in the pellet content, but less abundant in field. Rattus losea was more abundant in field but relatively lower in pellets. It was assumed that the diets of Short-eared owl may be affected by abundance of small mammals, prey size, wintering habitats of owl, and hunting success.
