Characterized as a relative small-scaled market, the Taiwan market is called “Island’s Market”. Firms in Taiwan, after accumulating the manufacturing capabilities in the domestic market, are forced to enter international markets to expand their territories. In order to enter into overseas markets that are in different levels of economic development other than the Taiwan market, what are the required capabilities in production and marketing for internationalization of Taiwanese firms? How Taiwanese firms adapt and adjust their capabilities dynamically as entering into various international markets? What is the sequence of market entry for firms’ international expansion? And what is relationship between the adaptation of dynamic capabilities and the sequence of market entry? Thus, this study focuses on the acquirement and the adaptation of dynamic capabilities for firms’ international expansion. This study is conducted by an in-depth case study of a focal company in the geo-synthetics industry in Taiwan. We explore how the focal firm has been entering into twelve overseas markets during the past nine years (1997-2005), and analyze how the firm adapts and adjusts its capabilities in each overseas market during a specific period of time.
Based on the nature of practice in the geo-synthetics industry, the capabilities of production and marketing can be classified into four dimensions and three dimensions respectively. We develop three types of market-entry sequence: (1) Ascending: entering from less-developed countries into newly industrialized countries or developed countries, (2) Descending: entering from developed countries into newly industrialized countries or less-developed countries; from newly industrialized countries into less-developed countries, and (3) Similar: entering into the same level of development countries. As well, the adaptation of dynamic capability is classified into three types: progressive, equivalent, and unneeded. We found that the sequence of market entry is neither dominated by a sequential model nor by the geographical proximity. Rather, the factor considered by the company is whether the company-owned capabilities and resources are enough to capture the opportunities of entering into the international markets. The qualitative results show that: (1) Firms do more progressive adaptation in production capability while entering from lower-developed country to higher-developed country. (2) Firms do more progressive adaptation in marketing capability while entering from higher-developed country to lower-developed country. (3) Comparing with the adaptation in marketing capabilities, the adaptation in production capability is a critical advantage for manufacturing-based firms to expand their international markets.
According to the qualitative results, four propositions are proposed for future research as well as for internationalization implication. Hopefully, this study contributes a more complete exploration of the relationship between the adaptation of dynamic capability and the sequence of international market entry.
